Creating a Server for Your Business

Create a server by clicking the “+” button in your Discord dashboard, which is located in the left side column. Choose the name, your region, and click create. Yes, it’s really that simple to launch your Discord app.

How many servers can your run at once? Great question! Run as many Servers as you want, for free. Perfect for multiple business owners. To add a new server, click the “+” icon at the very bottom of the server list and you’re off to the races!

Discord is free to use, but there are some premium features you might find useful.  We always recommend that businesses try the free version first before making the final decision to pay for anything.  If you’re planning robust growth growth for your business and you expect more robust tools, integrations and bots then the Discord app may be a better choice than Slack.

Defining Roles for Your Server

Get your whole team involved! But before inviting your employees, customers, vendors, or business partners, it is important to set permissions & roles for each team member. This assigns roles to users with a hierarchy so the information and conversations you have are protected. Under the server settings menu, you can create roles and assign permission to the roles with different parameters for each member.

Ideally, when someone is invited to your small business Discord server, they can’t see anything until they’re assigned a role by you!

Once this is done, they can see channels associated with the projects they’ve been assigned to, as well as a general chat channel.

In the Roles tab in your Server settings menu, you’ll be able to control what normal users can do. And don’t worry, no one on the server is allowed to PM anyone on the team unless they’ve been added as a friend. And yes, announcements are locked for obvious reasons.

Bots and Integrations

Discord bots can be added to a server just like any other member. On the left side of your dashboard, click “Members” and then “Add Member” next to the name you want to add as a bot.

This is done very easily by going into your server settings and choosing “Webhooks” from the left side menu on the Discord App, then clicking the blue button with an arrow pointing down next to where it says ‘Configure Webhook
